The increasing of air pollution needs new methods and tools for the monitoring of atmospheric composition.
The new generation of satellites for monitoring atmospheric composition like Sentinel-5P and the other complementary missions will deeply change the way the Earth Observation data provide information about Air quality and air pollution.
Air quality services are gaining more and more importance in different aspects of daily life, from basic information to citizens and public administration, to more elaborated information for agriculture, safeguard of cultural heritage sites, real estate. The combination of satellite observations, numerical models and in-situ measurements provide a complete description of the atmospheric chemistry. Long time series of data permit to highlight trends, anomalies and provide a large variety of services.
MEEO’s experience
MEEO has a long experience in managing data for atmospheric monitoring, from precipitation to air quality. The latter is having a boost with the new generation of Copernicus Sentinel-5P data, Copernicus Services (CAMS), and in situ data (European Environmental Agency). MEEO is managing the collection of Sentinel-5P data on the Registry of Open Data on Amazon Web Services, and CAMS data on the Mundi Webservices DIAS.
MEEO also provides a set of air quality services for a wide range of thematic domains. Relevant activities dealing with air quality are performed within the European Space Agency initiatives (TOP platform, AMiDA project), and in the framework of the HERACLES project funded by the European Commission.
